SQA Higher Chemistry

Higher Chemistry โ€” the jump everyone warns you about

Higher is the level most pupils find hardest, and the one universities look at. Small-group tuition with Lynsey Robinson, a qualified Chemistry teacher and SQA marker who knows exactly where the marks go.

Why Higher is the hard one

Almost every pupil says the same thing: National 5 went fine, and then Higher hit. The content is not just harder, it is different in kind. N5 rewards recall. Higher rewards applying something you understand to a situation you have never seen before, and that is a genuinely different skill.

Pupils also meet far more demanding calculations, and the exam expects them to explain reasoning rather than state an answer. A pupil can know the right chemistry, write a true sentence, and still score zero because it did not address what the question asked.

Because Lynsey marks Higher papers for the SQA, that gap is the thing these classes attack hardest. Pupils see what a full-mark answer actually looks like, and how close a losing answer often is to a winning one.

What we cover

The whole Higher course

Classes follow the SQA course through the year, then shift to past papers and exam technique as the exam approaches.

Course content follows the current SQA specification. Ask about the current year's arrangements.

How it works

Five pupils. No more.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ

Small groups

Never more than five. Everyone gets asked, everyone gets heard, and nobody sits quietly at the back not understanding.

Marked by an SQA marker

Lynsey marks for the SQA. Pupils learn how marks are actually awarded, and the phrasing that quietly loses them.

๐Ÿ“„

Real past papers

Exam technique is taught explicitly โ€” how to read the question, how to structure an answer, how to handle the open-ended ones.

Is this the right class?

This class is for pupils sitting Higher Chemistry โ€” whether that is the pupil who needs a specific grade for a university offer, or the pupil who was strong at N5 and has been blindsided by how much harder this year feels.

It is also worth considering if your child is taking Higher in one year having not done N5 Chemistry, which is a demanding route and much easier with support.

Places go quickly for Higher, particularly after the prelim. If you are considering it for later in the year, it is worth asking early.
